I have a MySQL database that has Russian characters in a  it. The user is in Europe and wants to update the content of the DB but the Russian characters are inserted/updated as question marks (?).
Field: pName
Type: varchar(255)
Collation: utf8_unicode_ci

Does any one have any experience with this or any advise?
Thanks for any direction.

First of all read carefully mySQL manual:
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/charset-connection.html
Then read User Comments!
Answer:
The charset of your DB and TABLE must be the same - UTF8
But if you use mySQL with default parameters, you create DB with latin1  charset
