i found and used an application a while back called, "imagecfc".  i use it to resize pictures mostly on our family album , but made a spot where you could see it in action.  Chip was testing the install for me, so i figured since it's not blowing up you folks could give it a whirl.

Upload a big@ss picture and it will be resized, a thumbnail created (thumbnail was my mod) and a thumbnail displayed.
this api does a lot more thani am currently using it for (think it even does visual effects and other things).
